The background for the Nordic Built Cities Challenge is the unprecedented urbanization that characterizes the 21st century. Resource scarcity, climate change and population increase pose major challenges to the cities of the world. Nevertheless, the situation also creates a global market for innovative solutions for our urban environment – and the overall aim of the Nordic Built Cities Challenge is to contribute to the development and visualization of Nordic innovative solutions for liveable, smart and sustainable cities.

In March 2015, Nordic cities and municipalities were asked to submit their urban challenges to the Nordic Built Cities Challenge. Out of 37 applications, an international jury selected the following six projects to form the basis for the competition:
• Kera in Espoo, Finland
• Sege Park in Malmö, Sweden
• Trygve Lies Plass in Oslo, Norway
• Kársnes Harbour in Kópavogur, Iceland
• Hans Tavsens Park & Korsgade in Copenhagen, Denmark
• Hillside in Runavík, Faroe Islands

In October 2015, the six independent competitions were launched, with one common goal: To find the best and most innovative Nordic solutions to the urban challenges. The response was overwhelming, with a total of 148 proposals being submitted. Six local juries eventually managed to reduce the number down to 23 multidisciplinary finalist teams. To further raise the bar for innovation, each finalist team was granted financial support, and guided through an extensive process of site visits, workshops, inspirational talks and collaborations.

The winners of the six local competitions were announced in Helsinki in June 2016. On top of this, all finalists who demonstrated Nordic cross-border collaboration within their teams were invited to compete for the prestigious Nordic Awards. 19 eligible contestants seized the opportunity to become the final Nordic Winners, and an international jury made their decision based on criteria such as level of innovation, export potential and human approach. The first prize in the competition was granted to The Soul of Nørrebro, second prize to Co-op City and third prize to Eyes of Runavík. In addition to a monetary prize, the winners will be showcased in the Nordic region and globally for inspiration and export.

The Nordic Built Cities Challenge is a part of Nordic Built Cities – a lighthouse programme in the Nordic Co-operation Programme for Innovation and Business Policies 2014-2017. Denmark is chairing the programme and is responsible for its implementation in cooperation with the other Nordic countries, the Nordic Council of Ministers and Nordic Innovation.
